Finding Flexibility, Friendship, and Focus at Digital Academy of Texas
For Italia, learning has never been limited to one classroom—or one country.
An eighth-grader from El Paso, Italia joined Digital Academy of Texas (DATX) in sixth grade seeking a faster academic pace and more flexibility for her family’s love of travel. Since then, she’s studied from hotel rooms in Europe, explored ancient ruins by day, and logged in for classes at night—balancing curiosity and commitment wherever she goes.
“When we were in Paris or Italy, I’d get up early to sight-see and then do schoolwork in the evenings,” she said. “It’s the best of both worlds.”
That balance is made possible through DATX’s Flex program, which allows students to work asynchronously while maintaining daily engagement and strong grades. For Italia, it’s meant the freedom to travel the world without ever missing an assignment—and the ability to take more advanced coursework that keeps her challenged and motivated.
Building Community, On and Offline
Though she learns virtually, Italia is anything but isolated. She’s the President of DATX’s Student Lighthouse Team, helping plan service projects, spirit days, and student events. She also serves as Vice President of the middle school SkillsUSA chapter, where she participates in leadership and communication competitions.
Outside of school, Italia finds her rhythm through Folklórico dance, performing at festivals like the Mariachi Spectacular and mentoring younger dancers in her 30-member studio. She also plays piano and participates in local recitals—further expanding her circle of friends and passions.
Inspired by Family—and the Future
Italia’s ambitions are shaped by both heart and home. She helps care for her grandmother, who has cardiac health challenges—managing medications, attending appointments, and learning about her condition—experiences that fuel Italia’s interest in medicine.
Looking ahead, she’s exploring paths in radiology or immigration law, careers that align with her problem-solving mindset, bilingual skills, and desire to help others—while DATX’s flexible model lets her keep traveling, learning, and leading.
