From Distraction to Direction: How Delilah and Gustavo Found Purpose and Community at Digital Academy of Texas

Uncategorized

For Delilah and Gustavo, school used to feel like a battle—one where distractions, negative influences, and constant disruptions made it hard to learn, let alone thrive. Today, the siblings from San Benito are honor students, leaders in their school community, and confident about their futures. Their turnaround didn’t happen overnight, but with the right environment and support, they found a path that honors their Christian faith, strengthens their family, and unlocks their potential.

A Family Decision Rooted in Faith—and Hope

Delilah and Gustavo’s older sister, Magdalena, calls herself their “spiritual mother,” and for good reason. When both students began struggling in traditional public school, prayer helped her realize that something needed to change. The environments they were in—marked by fights, drugs, distractions, and peer pressure—made it difficult for them to focus, behave, or stay on track academically.

“We knew they had more potential,” Magdalena shared. “They’re incredibly smart, but the influences around them were pulling them in the wrong direction.

Two years ago, Delilah and Gustavo made the leap to Digital Academy of Texas (DATX). And everything changed.

Delilah (11th Grade): From Struggling Student to School Leader

Before joining DATX her sophomore year, Delilah was failing nearly all of her classes. She was exhausted from waking up at 5:30 AM every morning, overwhelmed by the drama and disruptions at school, and discouraged by her slipping grades.

At DATX, she found something she hadn’t felt in years: peace.

“I love it,” she said. “There are so many positive influences around me, and I feel more like myself.”

Delilah quickly became involved in the Student Lighthouse Team, where she helps plan events and support her peers. She even stepped into a leadership role as Vice President—something her family once thought impossible.

“I saw leadership potential from the start, but it hadn’t surfaced yet,” Magdalena said. “Now she’s helping with pep rallies, encouraging other students, learning discipline, and earning a spot on the A+B honor roll. It’s a complete turnaround.”

Outside of class, Delilah writes her own pop music and dreams of a career in nursing, especially in labor and delivery or pediatrics—roles she used to pretend to play as a young child.

Gustavo (8th Grade): Finding Focus, Friendship, and Confidence

Gustavo joined DATX two years ago, and while he wasn’t sure about virtual school at first, he quickly discovered that the environment fit him better than anything he’d experienced before.

In traditional school, Gustavo—bright, curious, and energetic—often found himself in the principal’s office. Sitting still was difficult. Focus was nearly impossible. And the negative influences of middle school made things even harder.

At DATX, everything clicked.

Now, Gustavo is a straight A student who can sit, focus, complete assignments, and truly shine. He’s a member of the Student Lighthouse Team and loves helping other students by answering questions and building connections.

One of his favorite parts of DATX is the “zone,” a virtual room chat, where he can socialize, make new friends, and find a community of students who share his values.

Gustavo dreams big. He’d love to go to college and become a video-game streamer—or an NFL running back for the Tennessee Titans.

A Brighter Tomorrow Starts with the Right Environment

Delilah and Gustavo’s journey shows what can happen when students are given a learning space that supports who they are and who they can become. With flexibility, strong teacher relationships, and a positive peer community, the siblings have transformed their academic trajectories—and their lives.
